Mentorship Program   Applications Open Until December 31, 2025

Summer Global Health Mentorship Program

ABC’s For Global Health is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (NGO) dedicated to finding sustainable practical solutions to health problems in the Philippines such as prevalent chronic diseases.

Program Description:

The ABC’s for Global Health Summer Global Health Immersion Program is a comprehensive, 4-week program based in Pampanga, Philippines designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the Philippine health system, community medicine, public health principles, global health issues, research methodologies, and cultural knowledge. It targets high school, college, medical, and post-graduate students and professionals who are interested in exploring careers in healthcare, global health, and community development. The program combines clinical skills workshops, hands-on patient care experience, and interactive lectures to foster both theoretical and practical knowledge. Participants will engage in community-based projects and gain firsthand experience in a multicultural and multidisciplinary healthcare setting. Students have the opportunity to gain over 150 community service hours throughout the course of the trip (subject to their school's community service regulations and conditions).

This year, our trip will run from June 11th - July 11th.

Program Objectives:

  • Support Student Learning:
Mentors actively guide undergraduate and medical students through hands-on clinical work and research activities. This includes helping them frame research questions, collect and analyze data, and prepare their final presentation. Some groups may continue past the month to pursue publication.

  • Strengthen Global Health Skills:
Mentors participate in ABC’s mobile clinics, assisting with patient registration, vitals, and pharmacy while modeling clinical professionalism for students. They also gain exposure to public and global health principles in low-resource settings.

  • Lead Research Mentorship:
Mentors oversee ongoing and upcoming research projects in collaboration with ABCs and participating students. They support students throughout the research process—methodology, analysis, interpretation—and help them develop strong scientific communication skills.

  • Develop Leadership & Critical Thinking:
The program emphasizes leadership, ethical decision-making, and reflective practice—skills essential for mentors guiding student teams and working with vulnerable populations.

Eligible applicants:
College students, medical students, and postgraduate scholars worldwide who are interested in mentoring and community health. The program uses rolling admissions, and every applicant must complete a 20–30 minute online interview with Dr. Gabiola.

Final deadline for all applications and interviews is December 31st, 2025.

 Goals of SGHIP

Learn medical skills

With ABC’s mobile clinic, students learn medical skills like to take vitals and talk to patients while shadowing doctors. Other skills include suturing, how to use EKG machines, and how to perform physical exams. Students will also learn about non-communicable diseases, the medicines for them, telemedicine, and public health.

Visit different communities in the Philippines

Clinics allow students to visit 20 disadvantaged barangays (communities) in the Province of Pampanga in the Philippines. Weekends are open for trips to different parts of the Philippines, such as Manila, Baguio, and Tagaytay, to bond and explore Filipino culture together.

Conduct research

Students get the opportunity to research topics relating to the communities they visit. Research culminates into group projects led by our mentors. Previous years include research on diabetes, hypertension, and the social determinants of health. Students can also contribute to ongoing and upcoming research  in collaboration with ABC’s.

Build connections

Every clinic, students will learn to make connections with patients if it’s while taking their vitals, interviewing them for research, or just talking to them while they wait for a consultation. Yet, along with the medical aspect, a big aspect of this program is stepping outside of comfort zones and having fun! Throughout the month, students (high school, college, and medical) grow together as one big family learning collaboration and communication. Through Dr. Gabiola and Dr. Gallo, students get special opportunities like meeting the founders of the ABS-CBN foundation and touring the University of Philippines College of Medicine (from the 2023 and 2024 trip) that they experience with each other.

SGHIP TESTIMONIALS

"Coming to Pampanga with ABC's was truly a transformative experience. Although I was raised in a family with an extensive medical background, I was never exposed to the more clinical, humanistic aspects of medicine until I was able to witness Doctor Gallo and Doctor Gabiola in action. One thing that really stood out to me was the way that patients would be willing to sit for hours in the Philippine heat just to be able to have their checkup conducted by a doctor that truly cared for and, more importantly, wanted to form a deep connection with their patient. SGHIP is an amazing way to directly help communities with little to no access to healthcare while implementing strategies to create lasting effects in underserved communities. Without this program, I never would have discovered my passion for serving and the importance of discipline and perseverance."
