I joined ABC’s for Global Health as a premed student during my transition from business. In the wake of super typhoon Haiyan/Yolonda, the next medical mission set was set for Leyte, Philippines. I contacted Dr. Gabiola in hopes of joining this mission as well as available research opportunities. My interest in ABC’s grew quickly, and I took part in much of the logistics. Simultaneously, we laid the groundwork for the potential development of a mobile clinic that will allow for continuity of care and collaborative research with local universities and hospitals. Though I, unfortunately, was unable to be there in person, I am extremely proud of what had been accomplished after hearing first-hand accounts, watching the video diaries, and learning the numbers - almost 4,500 patients served by 100 local and US volunteers! With my residency training fast approaching, I am determined to return to ABC’s once I’m capable of sharing this gift with these underserved communities whom do not have the means to attain appropriate care. As done for me, I hope to guide students in their own pursuits. It would be an honor to improve the quality of life for one deserving patient, let alone a town!
